چکیده

Current geo web services and spatial data infrastructures support effectively the most common requirements and needs of spatial information users, such as discovering, accessing and visualization datasets. However, specialized users like water scientists carry out time-consuming tasks for capturing, analyzing and processing huge volumes of hydrological data by using commonly traditional GIS tools. To help water scientists in approaching to the spatial data infrastructure to use more effectively and efficiently their data and models, we describes in this paper an approach to model and develop distributed geoprocessing services for water resource management applications built on top of Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI). We illustrate our approach in a scenario for predicting runoff in the Alpine basins which may serve to easily extrapolate our experiences to other specialized application fields like environmental and climate changes applications, making the SDI vision available to a broader audience.

Geospatial Web Service Integration and Mashups for Water Resource Applications

Water resources management is critical due to its importance for human lives. In this context, we have developed a web-based system for hydrological applications that integrates geospatial processing services and mapping mashups to provide an interactive and user-friendly geoportal interface to the configuration and execution of scientific models. The server side provides hydrological model log...

Tethys: A Software Framework for Web-Based Modeling and Decision Support Applications

We have developed a software framework called Tethys to aid in the creation of web-based water resource modeling applications. This suite is a Python-based scripting environment that leverages open source tools for geoprocessing of spatial data, map rendering and visualization, distributed computing, and database management. The system makes it possible to deploy a calibrated, high-resolution w...

Designing Service Architectures for Distributed Geoprocessing: Challenges and Future Directions

In this paper we study the feasibility of using services offered by a Spatial Data Infrastructure as a basis for distributed service oriented geoprocessing. By developing a prototype we demonstrate that a Spatial Data Infrastructure facilitates rapid development of applications that solve typical problems for an existing risk management application. The prototype provides users with a distribut...
